The famous fairytale was first performed as a ballet in 1813 in Vienna produced by Louis Duport, a French dancer, choreographer, and ballet master. Nowadays, most productions use the music of Sergei Prokofiev who began his work on the score for Cinderella in 1940. Frederick Ashton was the first in the West to use Prokofiev’s score, and the audiences loved it. Ashton himself even appeared on stage as one of the stepsisters! The timeless tale has been adapted by ballet companies all over the world and is often laced with humor. Cinderella remains an iconic story that is fit for the screen and the stage!
Sergei Prokofiev’s incredible score for Cinderella is intended for a large orchestra consisting of instruments such as the piccolo, horns, harp, piano, and strings. Composed in 1940, Prokofiev uses the score to reflect the themes of the story. The very opening of the ballet is Cinderella’s sad theme set in E Minor-reflecting on her very gloomy and emotional life. Prokofiev wrote the majority of the ballet in C Major, which is a very important key in this ballet. C Major is a very warm and grounded key and every time it is heard, it conveys a beautiful and flowing melody that ties the ballet’s romantic storyline together. Prokofiev’s innovation in music composition brings life to the score and helps tell this classic fairy tale.
